                The Cost Benefit of
Transfer Dies vs. Progressive
LinearTransfer Automation is a leading supplier of transfer sys- tems, destack feeders, tandem lines and tooling.Tool design and motion profiles are determined prior to tool and transfer build, to optimize run rates and eliminate tooling interference, maximizing production rates.
We’re often asked by customers:
“What are some of the driving forces behind the recent populari- ty of stamping transfer parts that historically have been slated for progressive dies?”
The main driver behind this trend is the great amount of material savings a metalformer can realize by utilizing a transfer die rather than a progressive die. With rising material costs and the move to high-strength steels and aluminum alloys, material costs have become far more critical than in the past.
Die shops have become very innovative in the way blanks can be nested for maximum material utilization. Automation can be added to the die before it hits the transfer to achieve minimal waste in the process. And, transfer dies often can be less expensive than progressive dies, depending on complexity.
Some OEMs prefer their suppli- ers to use transfer dies in case there are engineering changes made to the part. These changes quite often can be made in one hit in a transfer-die station, rather then tearing out multiple stations in a progressive die.
Also, in a transfer die parts can be rotated and manipulated at high speeds, impossible to do in progressive dies. Die mainte- nance also is easier to perform in
transfer dies.
Today’s smooth profiles with
servo transfers allow parts to run much faster than in mechanical transfers. And, servo-transfer drivetrain-selection software is designed to be scalable, ensuring that the machine has enough power to prevent a bottleneck at the press.
The fact that a supplier can turn any press with sufficient stroke into a fully programmable trans- fer press makes the jump to becoming a transfer supplier much easier than it previously has been.
We take great satisfaction in helping companies that have never performed transfer stamp-
ing become transfer savvy—help- ing to save their customers money and make them more competitive.
