High-Strength Filament Tapes Engineered to Stick to Oily Metal Surfaces
3M, St. Paul, MN, has introduced a new proprietary adhesive formulation debut- ing in a portfolio of Scotch high-strength filament tapes. The new tapes, which use a modified synthetic rubber (MSR) adhesive, prove ideal for metal-coil tabbing, splic- ing and other
applications
(sheetmetal
drawing, rolling
and extruding,
for example)
involving oily
metal sur-
faces.
After a 2-min. dwell time, the 3M MSR adhesive provides as much as 50-percent greater adhesion, with continued performance over longer dwell times. In addition, its shear strength is equal to or better than natural rubber adhesives. The new port- folio of Scotch high-strength filament tapes featuring MSR adhesive is available in clear and black.

New SSAB Services Help Manufacturers Adapt to Forming High-Strength Steels
OEMs and other manufacturers working with high-strength steels now have access to a range of design solutions, steel-processing and logistics services thanks to a global network of pre-pro- cessing suppliers established by SSAB. The program, dubbed SSAB Shape, includes the supply of pre- processed and semi-finished parts; ready-made tubes and profiles from a range of SSAB high- strength steels; and tailored logistics and commu- nications solutions including vendor-managed inven- tory, EDI-communication and ERP integration.
Also new from SSAB are its Domex 900/960 and 1100 (1100-MPa tensile strength), a new generation of hot-rolled, thermomecanically processed, microal-
loyed high-strength strip steels. SSAB recommends the new grades for applications such as parts for cranes, building structures, trailer chassis and agricultural and forestry machinery.

Protective Packaging for Steel Fabricators
Dura-Fibre, Menasha, WI, introduces durable, puncture-proof laminated fiber- board that proves ideal for packaging fabricated steel products, as well as metal coils. The packaging board is manufactured with a blend of fibers that result in a strong base product. Multiple pieces of fiberboard are laminated together to cre- ate a finished product designed to resist tears, punctures and other abrasions. The product is lightweight and easy to handle, and slightly pliable to bend with
the shape of the packaged products. The packaging can be customized by size, and die-cut to fit the customers’
needs.

Metal Tubing Companies Unite
Private investment firm The Watermill Group, Lexington, MA, has acquired two manufacturers of metal tubing—Fine Tubes Ltd., Plymouth, UK, and Superior Tube Co. Inc., Collegeville, PA. Fine Tubes supplies the European market with seam- less, welded and welded-and-drawn tubes of stainless steel, nickel, titanium and zir- conium alloy. Superior Tube specializes in precision, small-diameter metal tubing for the nuclear, aerospace and medical markets, manufactured to tight toler- ances from stainless steel, nickel alloys and high-temperature and reactive alloys.
Sparrows Point Steel
Mill Changes Ownership
The former RG Steel Mill at Spar- rows Point, MD, idle since May 2012, has been acquired by joint-venture partners
Hilco Trading and Environmental Liabili- ty Transfer. The partners are “evaluating all of our options for the property,” says a spokesperson, including operating the mill in its entirety or partially, or remov- ing and reselling the equipment and redeveloping the site. The mill, the only fully integrated mill on the east coast of the United States capable of producing flat-rolled steel, houses North Ameri- ca’s second largest blast furnace.
