Stamper Earns Energy- Conservation Award for Laser-Welding Cell
The sheetmetal stamping and welding facility of Ogi- hara America Corp., Howell, MI, won the 2010 Energy Saving Commercial Project of the Year from DTE Energy and The Engineering Socie- ty of Detroit. The award rec- ognizes a company that’s made the most effective contribution to reducing energy by implementing a significant new-technology or new-equipment project.
Ogihara’s award-winning project: implementation of a laser-welding cell to fabri- cate a two-piece automo- tive-door assembly, reduc- ing energy consumption by 94 percent compared to the traditional resistance-weld- ing process.
D&S Recognized for
its Business-Education
Partnership
Metal fabricator D&S Manufacturing, Black River Falls, WI, received the Wis- consin State Superinten- dent’s Business Friends of Education Award, recogniz- ing its support of local tech- nical-education programs. D&S has purchased welding equipment and annually provides welding gases and wire to the local high-school welding program; assisted in the purchase of laser-cut- ting equipment for the mid- dle school; and provides steel for student projects.
D&S employees also work directly with technical- education teachers to pro- vide instruction in math,
basic machining and weld- ing. Further, the company supports the First Lego League hands-on program designed to teach science and technology to children ages 9 to 14, and provides scholarships for the Steps for Girls summer program.

The line, rated to 1000 ft./min., features a turret-head slitter with two 9- by 72-in. quick-change heads, and variable strip tensioning; 450 hp is avail- able for recoiling straight- wall tight coils. Roofings LTD manufactures metal building products.

As part of a major, ongo- ing expansion effort, Janco Steel Limited, Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, has ordered a Red Bud Industries com- bination stretcher leveler and multiblanking line, with blanking capacity to 0.188 in. thick and edge-trim and leveling capacity to 0.25 in.
