Planned to serve as GE Appliances’ Manufacturing Center of Excellence for water heaters, the firm’s new $70 million state-of-the-art water-heating manufacturing plant has opened in Camden, SC. Since 2016, GE Appliances has invested $2 billion in its U.S. manufacturing and distribution operations, adding more than 3000 new employees. The vertically integrated plant will produce units starting from steel coils and will use advanced systems for metal fabrication, welding and robotics for material handling and processing, and also will perform steel enameling. During plant construction and in preparation for launch, more than 50 team leaders and maintenance employees completed more than 5700 hr. of training in robotics, welding and mechatronics at nearby Central Carolina Technical College.
Vacuum Oil-Quench Furnace Commissioned
A newly designed vacuum oil-quench (VOQ) fur- nace recently entered into production at Solar Atmospheres of Western PA, after passing a vigor- ous startup protocol. The initial temperature-unifor- mity survey, compliant to AMS 2750 F, produced ±10 F results at all setpoints. Most importantly, the critical lift-and-place transfer mechanism worked
flawlessly. Other features include the ability to attain the actual work temperatures within the 36 by 36 by 48-in. hot zone. Additionally, with an atmosphere totally devoid of oxygen there is no need to use prob- lematic oxygen probes. Material surfaces are free from intergranular oxidation along with zero evidence of decarburized or carburized surface conditions.
