         Tech Update
Banana Diagram Evolves: Welcome the New Global Formability Diagram
Bubble chart. Banana diagram. Steel strength ductility diagram. It’s been called a lot of things over the years. Now, the chart plotting steel tensile strength vs. elongation has been updated by World- AutoSteel with new 3rd Gen advanced high-strength grades filling the upper right portion.
As a result, the organization says in a recent blog post, “perhaps it is more accu- rate to describe this as the football diagram, as the options now start to fall into the shape of an American or Rugby football.”
Officially, it is known as the steel Global Formability Diagram (GFD). Download the updated GFD, as well as definitions of all of the latest steel classifications, at www.ahssinsights.org.
Volvo Orders Two 3rd-Generation AP&T Multilayer Press- Hardening Furnaces
Volvo Car Body Components, Olofström, Sweden, has ordered two new multilayer furnaces from AP&T, replacing an existing furnace and adding a complementary one for the production of press-hardened auto- motive components. The new 3rd-gener- ation furnaces promise to increase pro- duction capacity and flexibility and reduce maintenance requirements and energy consumption.
Scheduled for installation during the summer of 2022, the furnaces will be integrated into an existing press-hardening line delivered to the facility by AP&T in 2015/2016.
“The investment increases our furnace capacity, which offers the opportunity to manufacture larger volumes and gives
us greater flexibility in production,” says Jonas Claesson, project manager and maintenance engineer at Volvo Cars Body Components. “We also are gaining a more energy-efficient process at the same
