Neighborhood-91-Wabtec-Philip-MoslenerOn June 8, Wabtec Corp. held a grand-opening celebration for its new 11,000-sq.-ft. facility at Neighborhood 91, an additive manufacturing (AM) production campus at Pittsburgh (PA) International Airport. At Neighborhood 91, Wabtec will produce production parts via 3D printing for rail and transit customers, employing state-of-the-art AM technology such as an SLM 800 AM machine from SLM Solutions to produce large-scale, lightweight parts while reducing lead times by as much as 80 percent.

Neighborhood 91, developed in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh, resides adjacent to the airport terminal and runway as part of the 195-acre Pittsburgh Airport Innovation Campus.

“Advances in additive technology are changing the way we design and build the next generation of business-critical, sustainable products for our customers,” says Eric Gebhardt, Wabtec chief technology officer. “Neighborhood 91 and its one-of-a-kind additive ecosystem will help foster creative solutions to engineering challenges and breakthroughs in 3D printing. Our Neighborhood 91 facility and the other additive labs in Western Pennsylvania will accelerate new innovations that shrink lead times, reduce cost and increase reliability.”

Wabtec production at Neighborhood 91 will include aluminum transit components such as brake parts, heat sinks for freight locomotives and other rail applications. The new facility is part of Wabtec’s initiative to use AM to provide parts faster, with a simplified supply chain, and apply advanced features that improve the application, all at a competitive price point. The company plans to use AM to produce more than 25,000 parts by 2025.

“To have a hometown Fortune 500 company like Wabtec continue to expand here in AM is a win for the airport and our region,” says Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “Thanks to Wabtec for being a great regional partner, and we look forward to the continued growth at Neighborhood 91.”

3D Metal Printing magazine recently profiled Neighborhood 91, reportedly the first development in the world to both condense and connect all components of the AM supply chain into one production ecosystem. The magazine also profiled Wabtecand highlighted its AM capabilities and goals as a Neighborhood 91 partner.

And, 3DMP’s 3D Metal Printing Experience and Tech Tour, a virtual event scheduled for June 22 and 24, will include a virtual tour of Neighborhood 91.
