The additive manufacturing (AM) industry has grown at a 19.5-percent clip in 2021, up from 7.5-percent growth in pandemic-challenged 2020, according to Wohlers Report 2022.

“As expected, the industry has returned to a period of advancement and investment,” says Terry Wohlers, head of advisory services and market intelligence at Wohlers Associates, commenting on Wohlers Report 2022, delivered through ASTM International. “This expansion cuts across aerospace, healthcare, automotive, consumer products, energy and other sectors.”

The 425-page report, published for the 27th consecutive year, provides a comprehensive look at the AM industry. This year’s edition, offers new and expanded content relating to AM production scaling; workforce development and sustainability; women in 3D printing; R&D programs; reports from industry experts in 34 countries; and the future of AM.

Other report findings include growth in the number of companies using AM for custom products and series production, and polymer powders as the most used AM material, overtaking photopolymers.
