ABB-IRB 7710-Robot-Press-Tending-Automate-2024At Automate 2024, ABB showcased additions to its modular, large-robot portfolio, namely the IRB 7710 and IRB 7720. The new robots, combined with recently launched IRB 5710-IRB 5720 and IRB 6710-IRB 6740, offer a combined total of 46 different variants capable of handling payloads from 70 to 620 kg.

The IRB 7710 (pictured in a press-tending application) and IRB 7720 offer 16 new variants and are suited to support applications across various industries, handling various applications for electric (EV), hybrid and traditional car production—spanning press automation, body-in-white, EV battery construction and final assembly. These robots reportedly are ideal for high- payload assembly such as gigacasting, high-speed press tending and palletizing, and high-accuracy contact applications such as machining and friction stir welding.

Powered by ABB‘s OmniCore, the new robots reportedly achieve precise motion control with path accuracy to 0.6 mm, even with multiple robots running at speeds to 1600 mm/sec. and moving payloads weighing to 620 kg. Users also can benefit from reductions to 25% in cycle times, further enhancing productivity and quality, acording to company officials. In the automotive industry, the new robots with OmniCore controllers can boost the output of robotic press lines. In the construction sector, the robots support the growth in modular construction via construction of steel building frames and surface finishing, with improvements in speed and quality.

The IRB 7710’s energy-efficient design in combination with OmniCore’s re-generation technology achieves as much as 30% energy reduction, while the built-in power pack can relay energy back to the grid.
