The Merger of Automation and Design Software
Fuels a New Industrial Revolution

The integration of the virtual and physical worlds--virtual design, planning and development of products and the production process, and optimized control--has led to three important benefits for manufacturers:

• Gains in efficiency;
• A “step-change improvement in production innovation; and
• A new ability to incorporate flexibility into mass production.

So notes an important article that discusses the role that software innovation will play in transforming industry, authored by Siemens executives for the Booz & Co. publication, strategy+business. Addressed in depth: innovation and speed to market; “game-changing manufacturing innovation” such as 3D printing; and the critical paths to building bridges between academia and business.

> UK Builder 3D-Prints Titanium-Alloy Bicycle Frame
A 33-percent weight reduction has given plenty of pedal power to the titanium-alloy mountain-bike frame manufactured by British bicycle-manufacturing company Empire Cycles. Fabricated using 3D metal-based additive-manufacturing technology from Renishaw plc, the frame not only is significantly lighter than its aluminum-alloy predecessor, but also is tougher than lighter carbon-fiber bike frames.
