Purchasing Execs Are Optimistic Heading into 2018
The U.S. economy will continue growing in 2018, according to a panel of purchasing and supply executives polled in the December Semiannual Economic Forecast by the Institute for Supply Management. The executives expect a 5.1-percent increase in overall revenues for 16 manufacturing industries, which include fabricated metal products, machinery, transportation equipment and appliances. In addition, the panel expects capital expenditures, a major driver in the U.S. economy, to increase by 2.7 percent in the manufacturing sector, and the employment base to grow by 1.2 percent.

Stanley Black & Decker Plans Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence
Stanley Black & Decker, Hartford, CT, announced plans for its Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence in downtown Hartford to accelerate its global Manufactory 4.0 smart factory initiative. Named after the original Stanley Bolt Manufactory founded in 1843, the 23,000-sq.-ft. center will be located inside the existing One Constitution Plaza building and is expected to employ approximately 50 people. Exactly when the center will open is uncertain, though a lease has been signed. The company appointed Sudhi Bangalore, most recently global head of smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 solutions for Wipro, Ltd., Bengaluru, India, to lead the center. It also plans on launching an additive-manufacturing accelerator at the facility along with Techstars, Boulder, CO.
