U.S. Manufacturing: Prosperity
Via Productivity Rather than Trade Policy
So goes this Washington Times article, penned by a pair of Boston Consulting Group partners who opine that while America has added more than 1.5 million manufacturing-related jobs in the past six years. these recent gains now are being threatened not by cheap overseas labor or rising energy prices, but by a significant slowdown in U.S. productivity growth.

"To achieve the kind of step change that's required," they write, "manufacturers need to be bold and aggressive in integrating advanced technology and analytics into their operations, adopting what's now being called 'industry 4.0.'"

Held up as an example of how such adoption can pay off is Harley-Davidson Motor Co., which applies a variety of 'next-gen' techniques to produce customized motorcycles, ready for delivery to the customer, in 6 hr., a process that once took 21 days.

Learn here why it might be smarter to focus less on trade policy and more on innovation.

> Time-Lapse Video Shows Press Install Start to Finish

Check out this cool time-lapse video, on the Stamtec website, showing the installation of a huge 1320-ton mechanical transfer press (72- by 244-in. bed) at Goodman Manufacturing Co., a major HVAC manufacturer located outside of Houston, TX, from loading the truck to preparing the pit to stacking and assembling the press. Including footage filmed with a camera-carrying drone, the video compresses 60 days of work down into a video lasting slightly longer than 2 min. Also featured: a Noble front-to-back transfer system and Coe 60-in. servo-feed line.
