Boeing the Poster Child for Manufacturing's Labor Crisis
Some 10,000 Boeing machinists may soon retire from the company's facility in Puget Sound, WA. That dilemma, brought on in part due to the company's decision to freeze pensions along with the aging of its workforce, underlines the coming skilled-labor gap among U.S. manufacturers. This Bloomberg article explains Boeing's plight, puts it into a broader U.S. perspective and provides insights into how Boeing expects to handle its skilled-labor shortage. In part, it's stepping up training and mentoring programs within its factories.

> The Pace of Robotization is Quickening Considerably
A Boston Consulting Group position paper opines that "fewer than 8 percent of tasks in the U.S. transportation-equipment industry are automated, compared with a potential of 53 percent." That, and other factors--"a number of economic and technical barriers to wider adoption (of robots) are beginning to fall," the paper notes—should lead to a 10-percent annual growth rate for the installed base of robotics during the next decade.

The lengthy and detail-laden article offers this example of how economic barriers to robotization are lessening: the cost to purchase and deploy a robotic spot-welding system decreased from $182,000 in 2005 to $133,000 in 2014, and will drop to $103,0000 by 2025 (not adjusted for inflation).
