Skills Gap Not to Blame for a Lack of Hiring
According to a recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, manufacturers posted 379,000 job openings last July, up more than 280 percent since the recession ended more than seven years ago. However, hiring is up just 36 percent during that time, and has been flat over the past year as manufacturing jobs go unfilled.

While the skills gap often gets blamed for this, this article concludes that "it's not clear that companies are really trying hard to fill many of these jobs at all."

Citing survey data, the report notes that 62 percent of manufacturing production workers have no education past high school, and 80 percent have neither an associate's nor a bachelor's degree, and suggests that manufacturers aren't replacing less-educated older workers with more-educated young ones. Rather than degrees or licenses, what employers say they are struggling to find are workers with industry-specific skills, such as how to program the machines that do much of the physical work in modern factories.

Here's the article.

Picking Up What
Vacuum Cups Cannot

Transporter®LP magnetic end-of-arm tooling is designed to transfer metal blanks, stampings and parts in automated and robotic applications. Engineered with powerful Rare Earth magnets, they will hold parts during power loss, minimize part shifting, provide more options for picking up perforated or odd parts, and reduce shop air costs significantly compared to vacuum cups.

Consistent Stock Lubrication Systems

Nordson EFD's MicroCoat® system uses LVLP (Low Volume, Low Pressure) technology for precise, consistent lubrication of stock or dies. Get precise, exact coverage, extended tool life, and up to 85% oil savings. See what MicroCoat users have to say.

> Survey Shows Positive Outlook for Manufacturing, Automotive Sector
A new survey from RSM finds that middle-market manufacturers and automotive suppliers are optimistic about business growth, even as automotive suppliers face pressures such as OEM pricing, changing requirements, erratic schedules and rising employee costs. And, for sure some sectors–energy, agriculture and general industrial manufacturing—are experiencing a decrease in demand.

Some 70 percent of manufacturers in the United States and around the world expect an increase in operating profits, and more than half expect to increase their workforce; 75 percent expect to increase revenues. In the United States, 40 percent self-identify as thriving and 55 percent say they are holding steady.

In This Issue:

> Automotive Outlook: Challenges Abound for Tool and Die
The news is good now, but trends toward model complexity and OEMs shifting costs down the supply chain, coupled with an expected plateau in vehicle production, will require that tool and die shops gather and analyze data to shore up their sales processes.

> Servo Technolog—-Revenue Gains with Every Stroke
Nowadays, stampers in the market for a new press will find it difficult to justify NOT purchasing a servo-driven model. The process for justifying the relatively small premium for servo presses will play out at our upcoming servo-technology conference, October 5-6 in Nashville. Also on tap: how integration of related pressroom equipment enhances overall press efficiency.
