Top Issues Facing Automotive Suppliers
The automotive-industry team at Foley & Lardner LLP has published a 30-page white paper that examines what the litigation, enforcement and regulatory landscape looks like in 2016. Inside, you will learn about the latest in:
  • Managing force majeure events, warranty and recall exposure, volume fluctuations, and international dispute resolution;
  • Dealing with financially strained customers and suppliers;
  • Mitigating labor and management issues, including contractor classification and paid sick leave; and
  • Reducing compliance risk related to vehicle safety and reporting, exploring autonomous and crash-avoidance technologies, and reviewing regulatory developments related to vehicular cybersecurity measures.

> New: Technology Roadmap for Ensuring Steel's Role in Automotive Lightweighting
The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) has released its 2016 Steel Industry Technology Roadmap for Automotive, providing a look at the long-term technology needs to support the growing use of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). The roadmap addresses, among other topics, optimized design, fuel economy, strength and durability, and environmental performance. Of great interest to metalformers and other manufacturers supplying the automotive industry are the technology gaps and challenges identified in the roadmap related to the application of AHSS. Primary strategic areas addressed include CAE modeling and simulation, and forming, tooling and welding technologies.

MetalForming met with a team from SMDI at the CAR MBS (Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars) in Traverse City, MI, last week to discuss the new roadmap. Says Jody Hall, SMDI vice president, automotive market:

"This is the third generation of the roadmap, developed to ensure that the OEMs and suppliers can effectively use AHSS materials. Use of these steels has grown at a rate 20-percent greater than expected back in 2010-2011, much of which is being stamped and welded by suppliers. With the roadmap, we've identified some of the areas where further development is needed to ensure seamless integration of these steels into production. One of the key areas we addressed in this edition of the roadmap relates to CAE, identifying where the codes are weak and where they need further development.

"There are more than 200 steel grades used in the automotive industry today," Hall continues. "We expect the roadmap to open up a dialogue within the industry that can help identify other areas we should focus on for additional development."

Specific stamping-technology gaps identified in the roadmap include accurate material data; validated forming-simulation techniques; springback prediction and control; and updated pierce and trim techniques. Hot-stamping, hydroforming and rollforming processes also are covered, as are tooling technologies including lubrication, die surface treatment and die materials.
