Worker Fulfillment Key to Future of American Manufacturing
That’s the word from Toyota, as the company shares success stories from partners via The Toyota Effect initiative. Worker fulfillment, as this article points out, has been the driving factor behind the success of legacy company ACE Metal Crafts. The company has recognized how contingent its organizational longevity was on hundreds of team members and their stake in the manufacturing processes.

“As we look toward the future state of manufacturing and business processes,” the article reads, “organizations are finding new ways to innovate and build upon rather than rest on that history (of success in American manufacturing). A part of that process requires that the American worker feels supported in shaping business practices and systems.”

> Manufacturers Increasingly at Risk for Cyber Attack
“Major companies involved in manufacturing, such as Rockwell Automation and Cisco Systems, have recently noted that manufacturing is becoming a larger target for cyber attacks. The connected or ‘smart’ factory is becoming increasingly vulnerable.”

This warning comes via a blog post from Rob Spiegel, senior editor, Automation & Motion Control, for Design News. As manufacturers rush to Internet of things (IoT) technology in their plants, they tend to overlook the related security issues. To address these IoT concerns, GSMA, a European standards organization, has published security guidelines.

“With all of the machine-to-machine connectivity that IoT offers,” writes Spiegel, “security needs to be embedded in the manufacturing process itself. Perimeters around the plant are not sufficient protection any longer.”

For more on IoT security issues in manufacturing environments, and how they can be combatted, read on.

> PMA Kicks Off New Fabricating Networking Group
Join your executive peers, May 18-20, 2016, in Cleveland, OH, for the inaugural meeting of PMA’s new executive networking group for metal-fabricating executives. This group is being formed to allow upper-level metal-fabricating management to participate in a confidential and legal forum where they can share best practices, benchmark operations and network with peers.

Once finalized, this group will meet two or three times per year. Meetings will include plant tours, guest presenters and facilitated roundtable discussions.

Meeting registration for this single, formative meeting in Cleveland is $599 per participant. For more information, please contact Rosemary David,
