Survey Summarizes What’s in Store This Holiday Season for U.S. Workers
Manufacturers are the most likely to provide workers extra time off at year's end, according to a new Bloomberg BNA survey of year-end holiday practices. Eighty-two percent of manufacturing companies will provide at least three paid days off, compared to only half of all non-manufacturers and 48 percent of nonbusiness organizations such as hospitals and municipalities.

Other survey findings: Three-quarters of workers drawing holiday duty will be “well-compensated” and 52 percent of employers will provide time-and-a-half or double time. Four out of five companies will sponsor an event allowing employees to celebrate the holidays. And, alcohol is on tap at two-thirds of all celebrations, along with alcohol safeguards--66 percent of these celebrations will feature alcohol, and 58 percent will provide an open bar.

> GE Brings 3D Metal Printing “Out of the Shadows of Prototyping
…and into the large-scale production arena.” Watch in this 3-min.-45-sec. video as 3D CAD files for the GE LEAP engine fuel nozzles are uploaded to a series of direct metal laser melting (DMLM) machines, which build the nozzles from a cobalt-chrome superalloy. Hear from plant leader Joe Markiewicz as he explains why the DMLM process has helped the firm upgrade product design to improve jet-engine performance.

Also performed at the plant: post-processing technology including EDM, heattreating, and unique nondestructive inspection processes. The facility will manufacture, at full capacity, as many as 45,000 fuel nozzles per year using the printing process.
