Chinese imports at an All-Time High
Recently released September trade figures paint a bleak picture: “The trade deficit in manufacturing hit a record $74.69 billion in September,” notes economist Alan Tonelson in an online post by the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM).

"Imports from China are killing America’s manufacturing recovery,” adds AAM president Scott Paul. “It’s time for the Obama administration and Congress to give new tools to our industry and workers to fight against unfair imports from China.”

> Can U.S. Manufacturers Make Hay in Cuba?
One Alabama startup seems to think so. Cuba is loaded with the type of small family farms once prevalent in the U.S., many of which are in dire need of tractors. A CCTV news video report from this week’s Havana International Trade Fair, November 2-7, showcases a newly formed Alabama-based company with hopes to begin manufacturing tractors in Cuba.

The trade fair features some 25 U.S. companies and trade organizations, including big OEMs like Cargill and Caterpillar, and small companies such as the newly formed Cleber LLC. Cleber executives, upon U.S. government approval, hope to manufacture low-cost tractors for Cuba’s small farmers.

As noted in the video, the Cleber tractor is based on a relatively simple and low-cost Allis-Chalmers model built in the 1950s. They initially plan to fabricate tractor parts in Alabama for assembly in Cuba, and transition over time to an all-Cuban-manufactured tractor.
