Why Does America Love Manufacturing Jobs?
The New Yorker recently published this piece that aims to explain why manufacturing, and the jobs manufacturing companies create, stands at the top of the hit list for politicians making the circuit. A key quote:

“Because unskilled workers still make up a significant portion of the American workforce, manufacturing is for millions of people the best economic choice available.”

The author opines that the hype about manufacturing is “misplaced and anachronistic,” noting that factories lead the human employee to be treated as “an appendage of the machine.”

> CFO Survey of Mid-Market Manufacturers Reveals Growing Optimism
Economic momentum is driving CFO confidence higher, according to a new survey from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. However, the 2015 CFO Outlook Pulse Survey also indicates that although most manufacturing companies are increasing their investments in data security, they are less likely to maintain a comprehensive plan to detect and control fraud.

Among key data points: 75 percent of manufacturing finance executives report having formal data-security plans, while 86 percent of nonmanufacturing respondents report implementing similar plans. Further, 11 percent of manufacturers reported experiencing a data breach at their companies. Meanwhile, 64 percent of manufacturers report that their mid-2015 revenues “met or exceeded expectations” while more than 90 percent of those surveyed expect to generate earnings growth through domestic expansion.
