Manufacturing’s Critical Role:
Infographic Tells Quite a Compelling Story
Yes, the healthcare industry employs more Americans than any other industry. However, manufacturing still plays a major role in our economy, employing more than 11 million Americans. That ranks manufacturing fourth on the list, ahead of industries such as finance and insurance, construction and educational services. At the same time, manufacturing ranks right up there in average annual payroll per employee, at $53,500, ahead of sectors like healthcare, educational services and real estate.

This information-packed infographic, produced late last year, details these and other statistics that gauge manufacturing’s impact on the U.S. economy. Quiz time: Of the top 10 industries in which manufacturers work, fabricated-metal product manufacturing ranks #2. Can you guess which industry employs more manufacturing employees? Hint: It’s not transportation-equipment manufacturing.

> The 80-20 Rule—One Rule Meant to be Broken
Diversification for small and midsized manufacturers (SMMs) is on the mind of Forbes contributor Mike Collins, warning companies to avoid having a small number of customers represent a large majority of sales. Offered up as a case study: Davis Tool, Hillsboro, OR, a 200,000-sq.-ft. contract manufacturer of precision-machined parts, sheetmetal parts and assemblies. CEO Ron Davis “saw the handwriting on the wall, as commodity job-shop parts were sourced more and more from Asia.”

Collins explains how Davis Tool broke free from the 80-20 rule through a series of strategic moves, including becoming more vertically integrated (machining, fabrication, plating, laser cutting, etc.); profiling customers to identify those that best fit its capabilities; and cross-training its employees, including teaching machinists how to operate laser-cutting machines.
