NPR Podcast: The Continuous Education of Manufacturing Workers
As part of its ongoing series, American Made, NPR recently posted a podcast on the future of American manufacturing--a 6-min. chat with Adam Davidson, co-founder of NPR's Planet Money. Listen to Davidson expound on his premise that “if you want to succeed (in manufacturing) for the coming decades, you don’t just need to be trained and then a few years later retrained. You need a continuous improvement in your education…manufacturing is going to look more and more like computer programming and engineering…more brainwork and a lot less brawn work.”

Davidson goes on to eloquently discuss why, in addition to physically making products, ideas will matter more.

> A New Product-Development Environment
to Level the Global Manufacturing Playing Field

U.S. manufacturers can “level the playing field with low-cost producers” by developing a new approach to product development, one that closely integrates product design and production processes. So opines software consultant Tobin McGregor in a Manufacturing Business Technology blog post focused on the newly established Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute. McGregor explains the three “fibers” that will carry data throughout design engineering, production engineering, marketing, sales and customer service: big data, analysis tools and intelligent machines.

McGregor also offers his scenario for big data making its way into small and medium-sized manufacturers, overcoming hurdles such as affordability of the technology and accessibility to data networks.
