New Powder-Coating Products, App and Learning Center
Nordson Industrial Coating Sys- tems has released Encore nLighten, a safety-approved accessory that adds the power of an LED light to the capabilities of the company’s Encore manual spray gun, and also rolled out the first major component of its Digital Solutions platform, the Parts Ordering App. Both were on display at FABTECH, as was infor- mation on the company’s expanded Nordson University.
nLighten reduces rework, decreases the material waste, and eliminates the use of unrated flashlights and other light sources that can create hazards for employees in a powder-spraying environment, according to company officials.
With the new Parts Ordering App, maintenance and engineering teams will have detailed access to replacement parts and image views through mobile smart devices such as a phone or tablet.
The company also has expanded Nordson University at the company’s headquarters in Amherst, OH. Nordson University is a two-day workshop that allows customers to learn the fundamentals of powder coating while receiving hands-on experience with Nordson powder-coating machinery. It employs machine data to structure education, testing and development services for customers, their engineering teams and their workforces. This is achieved through hands-on training, simulated advanced factory environments, skill-building in preventive maintenance and troubleshooting, and advanced analytics to improve quality and process optimization, and accelerate new- product development.
“Customers get the opportunity to test our technology prior to making a purchase, and get a personalized, hands-on experience in our lab where we help them optimize their powder-coating process,” explains Greg Dawson, senior sales manager.
Equipment labs are placed outside of the classroom doors, with booths, ovens and conveyors located in ideal locations for customers’ new-product-development work. Nordson Industrial Coating Systems: www.nordson.com
Bank Offers Tariff Help
To assist metalformers impacted by the aluminum and steel tariffs, Sunwest Bank in Irvine, CA, has introduced a special Tariff Line of Credit. In a press release, the bank explains the reason for the Tariff Line of Credit: “Given the significance of these tariffs and the traditional accounts receivable/borrowing base calculations for banks, many borrowers will run out of capacity through their traditional facilities. As entrepreneurs, we realize the impact that the tariffs will have on manufacturers nationwide.”
Coating-Thickness Measurement and Alloy Analysis
The Fischerscope X-Ray XAN 500, a new, lightweight x-ray fluorescence instrument from Fischer Technology Inc. provides coating-thickness measurement and material analysis of alloys. Ideal for quality, incoming inspection and process control of electroplated, multilayer and alloy coatings, it can be used as a handheld device, a fully enclosed desktop unit or integrated directly into production lines.
Its small size helps with measuring on difficult geometries such as large irreg- ularly shaped parts or in offline locations. With its excellent accuracy and long-term stability, according to company officials, the need for time-intensive and costly recalibration is reduced.

Benada Aluminum Ramps Up Production
Benada Aluminum has added a pro- duction line at its headquarters in Sanford, FL. The company has an annual capacity of 60-million lb. of aluminum extrusions.
“With a favorable business climate in Florida we are excited to add this capacity and optimistic about the future of Benada,” says President Jim Piperato. “We’re also looking forward to adding more jobs to the community.” When the current management team took control in 2015 the company employed 110 people. Piperato anticipates employing 250 people by year’s end.
Primer Provides Extended Corrosion Protection
A patented polyurethane primer, Spec- tracron AdvantEdge HPP, from PPG, can be used in heavy-duty equipment, general finishing and transportation applications. It provides extended corrosion protection, enhanced performance on sharp laser- cut edges, and superior chip resistance, according to company officials.
Formulated without heavy metals, the primer provides a more sustainable solution for achieving superior corrosion resistance and sharp-edge performance. A wide appli- cation window, compatibility with common topcoat hardeners and shorter wet-on- wet application times enable applicators to increase process efficiency.
It works with an array of pretreatment systems and delivers corrosion protection on many different substrates, helping to ensure consistent end-product quality despite variation in surfaces and surface prep. PPG: www.ppgindustrialcoatings.com
