Innovative and Flexible Press-Feed Lines
As a long-time member, Dallas Industries knows the impor- tance of PMA and congratulates the association on its 75th anniversary.
Dallas products include servo feeds, pull-through and pow- ered straight-
eners, and single- and double-end coil reels and cradles. Inno- vative solutions include Space- Saver lines that reduce floor-
space requirements. For conventional lines, Dallas’ SyncLoop may eliminate the need for a looping pit.
DallaSmart controls encompass numerous innovations, in- cluding ProfileSelect software that employs a cam-motion profile, delivering a smoother feed motion that reduces stress on the material and feed system.

“it’s critical, looking toward the future, to become unstuck from the reactive mode,” Carroll notes. “Instead, suppliers must become active partners with their customers in this iterative design and rapid-prototyping cycle. Be more active and less reactive, and look for opportunities to innovate.”
Managing in this Brave, New World
Carroll’s above-referenced blog post notes that “there remain folks who just refuse to participate in the inevitability of the future, and that can be a significant leadership, strategic challenge...Many people today feel that the world is moving way too fast for them, and that the pace of change is overwhelming.”
In a recent poll of seminar attendees, Carroll found that many organizations do in fact feel overwhelmed by change, and that many executives believe that they don’t really need to do anything to deal with it.
“In other words,” Carroll says, “they believe that the future can be safely ignored. I use the ‘Jetsons-meets-the-Flintstones’ concept as a joke, but it’s not—this is a real and substantive leadership issue. As a CEO or senior executive, how are you going to align a fast-paced future—one full of challenge and opportunity—to an organization where a significant number of people don’t think that the future will impact them?”
How Can We Prepare for a Fast-Paced Future?
Building on our conversation with Carroll, and his empha- sis on innovation as critical to unlocking a flourishing man- ufacturing industry, we asked PMA members to share their views of the future. Current PMA Chairman Dave Arndt, pres-
ident of metalformer Pentaflex, Springfield, OH, immediately emphasizes the labor issue plaguing manufacturers, noting that automation will continue to replace manual labor in many instances. However, this leads to an increased need for more skilled technicians to program, operate and maintain robots and other automated equipment, Arndt says.
We asked Arndt to describe key areas of production where
                            PMA’s 2017 Chairman Dave Arndt, president of metalformer Pentaflex, Springfield, OH, describes three key areas of production where metalformers can create a unique value proposition for their customers:
• 3D printing for prototyping, fixture build, fabrication of spare die parts, etc., which can become a key advantage;
• Optimizing design of robotic weld cells to improve welding capabilities; and
• Gaining working knowledge of designing tooling to take full advantage of servo- press capabilities.
