Research Funded to Benchmark Additive Manufacturing of Metals
Lincoln Electric and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, co-investi- gators developing a proprietary laser-assisted wire-based additive-manufacturing process for titanium- and nickel-based alloys, have received a second round of funding from America Makes (originally the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute).
The research project, undertaken with partnering companies including AZZ/WSI, rp+m and RTI Intl., has focused on metal-cladding and layering to repair molds used in aluminum casting for the automotive industry. During round two, researchers will test and benchmark the process for generating structural parts with titanium alloys, and functional surfaces with nickel-based alloys.

E-Coating Optimized for Electronics
PPG Industries, Pittsburgh, PA, has developed an electro-deposition coat- ing dubbed Electrocolor 3500, designed as a lightly tinted clearcoat for applica- tion on metal surfaces of tablets and notebook computers, smart phones and other consumer-electronic devices. Says Bill Barrett, PPG business development manager, consumer electronics, Americas:
“This new coating gives metal an organic appearance while protecting it from the chemicals ultraviolet exposure and abrasion it will encounter in every- day use.”
The Electrocolor 3500 coating, which also can be used for appliances and other applications requiring a decorative metal- lic appearance, offers high yield rates for applicators due to its high transfer effi- ciency and color consistency.
