Q:What are the benefits of an ERP system in the cloud?
A:Manufacturers and their suppliers need immediate access to real-time plant-floor data. A manufacturing ERP sys-
tem captures granular data in real time across the business. Benefits of an ERP system in the cloud include built-in quali- ty management, production compliance and reduced costs of manufacturing oper- ations. Companies seeking improved com- munications with their suppliers and cus- tomers rely on cloud-based ERP to pro- vide one version of the truth regarding purchase-order releases, problem control, sharing of documents and more.

AHSS
Q:Are there any rules of thumb for straightening advanced high
strength steels (AHSS)?
A:Yes—metalformers should consider several straightener design parame-
ters when forming AHSS, including the diameter, spacing and structural support of the work rolls, and straightening force and power requirements. Generally, straightening of AHSS requires smaller work rolls and greater straightening force, which means greater motor power and torque along with greater machine struc- tural rigidity. Don’t assume that a conven- tional straightener will process AHSS.

Q:What should metalformers
look for in a quality-management
system?
A:Regulatory demands and product recalls have resulted in the need for
manufacturers to know the origin and source of product parts. Metalformers should seek ERP quality-management software that captures data at the part level and communicates granular data across the business. Built-in quality on the plant floor includes production com- pliance with predefined tolerances and operator alerts when parts are out of con- formance. This will prevent waste in pro- duction and boost profitability.
