 Straightening HSLA Steel
Matt Watson, national sales manager, Formtek Maine
Q:Every time we attempt to straighten high- strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel with our
existing press-feed equipment, originally purchased for mild-steel applications, we struggle to achieve flat parts. What are our options for dealing with HSLA material?
A: To achieve flat parts, the material must be worked beyond its yield point to remove internal stresses. Typically, straighteners designed for mild steel use large-diameter rolls with large center dis-
tances between the rolls. To effectively straighten HSLA material, what’s required are smaller-diameter backed-up rolls with close cen- ter distances. www.cwpcoil.com
   In-Die Sensing
Jim Finnerty, product manager, Wintriss Controls
Q:We’re running a progressive die blanking 0.008-in. stainless steel, and are getting
pulled slugs that get squashed into the part by the stripper. We’re having difficulty detecting the problem with our tonnage monitor. Is there a better way to do it?
A:The increase in tonnage caused by a pulled slug under the stripper is too small to be reliably detected. Use analog induc-
tive proximity sensors to measure the height of the stripper plate at bottom dead center. When a slug is pulled, the stripper will be too high; the sensors will detect this and stop the press, even if the strip- per height difference is as small as 0.0005 in. www.wintriss.com
