Just how do you know that cam will return? Just for a moment, imagine the die nervously expecting, with every press stroke, for the cam to extend and retract its set of tool- ing. Once again, the jury is shown that there is no CAD sim- ulation package that includes a “No Cam Return” icon.
Die Closure
I once had a client in Ohio with a toolmaker who would yell, “Oh Sweet Jeeeez” every time he opened a die to begin his failure analysis. Your honor, I am referring to a die autop- sy, where the toolmaker looks for fossils, impressions and embedded metal pieces on the inner surfaces of die that have altered its shut height. Our die assumed, as the die designer specified, that the upper section would be lowered to with- in a precise point. No such luck, your honor, because the stamper ran its dies following the guideline: “If you can’t make a good part, hit it harder!” Our die never expected to have its stop blocks embedded into the upper tooling.
The dies on trial above were designed under certain crit- ical assumptions and expectations. All I am suggesting is for stampers to accept and conform to what their dies need in order to function properly. This is the first and most impor- tant step on the mission to launch a die-protection electronic sensor program. MF
