With Solar Atmospheres’ new gas-cool- ing technology, PH stainless steels can be annealed, cooled to below 60 F and age hardened, all under vacuum condi- tions in a single heattreat batch, vacuum- furnace process. The result is consistently clean, bright and nondiscolored parts that meet material-property specs.

Fisher-Barton Opens New Materials-Research Lab
Loaded with state-of-the-art instru- mentation for microscopic, chemical and mechanical analysis of metals and other materials, the new 1800-sq.-ft. materials-research laboratory is open for business at the Fisher-Barton Spe- cialty Products division in Watertown, WI. The $2 million lab will support all seven of the company’s independent sub- sidiaries that manufacture high-value components for the agricultural, out- door-power, medical-device, solar-power and other industries. Among the labo- ratory’s capabilities: scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spec- trometry for high-magnification imaging and elemental and chemical character- ization; x-ray fluorescence and diffraction for analyzing complex, unknown bulk samples and identifying the elements and crystallographic structure of samples; and drop-weight impact testing. Service Center Installs Double-Driven Eccentric Rotary Shear
Olympic Steel’s Cleveland, OH facility has installed a new rotary shear from Butech Bliss, Salem, OH. The eccentric rotary shear features one knife holder providing downward displacement and a second knife holder that rotates upward across the strip. Their action is synchro- nized, along with reaction arms on roller guides, for cutting the strip at predeter-
mined lengths without stopping. A pair of 400-hp motors power cutting at up to 200 ft./min. along an existing temper mill and cut-to-length (CTL) line. Other shear features include automatic knife-gap adjustment and threading tables.
Olympic Steel also announced plans to have Butech Bliss install a new CTL line at its service center in Gary, IN. The line,
slated for installation in Q1 2012, will process high-strength steel 0.075 to 0.530 in. thick, and coils to 80,000 lb. by 7 4 in. wide.
