Laser-Cutting System Boasts Numerous Automated Features
Mazak Optonics Corp., Schaumburg, IL, intro- duces the HyperGear 612 2D laser-cutting machine, which combines intelligent automation features with high cutting speeds. The machine includes automated torch changer and noz-
zle changer, CCD-camera-based nozzle- damage analysis and automated lens analysis and focal-point meas- urement and adjustment—to maintain optimal cutting condi-
tions and improve productivity while minimizing labor costs.
The new Preview II controller includes patent-
ed CNC features to anticipate corners and adapt cutting parameters to maintain tol- erances. It utilizes elliptical movements and other intelligent functions to deliver fast part production.
The HyperGear 612 is available with 2500- and 4000-W laser resonators, with a 79 by 158-in. bed. A smaller 510 model also is available with a 60 by 120-in. bed. Automated material-handling equipment designed for the efficient processing of sheet- metal and plate helps to increase throughput.

Protecting Coated Coils
Most manufacturers realize that pre- painted metal coils require more care than raw coils, but doing so requires less changes than some may imagine. Painted material is not fragile if properly speci- fied, and typically is stamped and roll- formed without protective coverings. These practices outlined by the Nation- al Coil Coating Association (NCCA) ensure successful handling of prepainted coil.
The two packaging options are eye to the sky and horizontal eye. Eye-to-the-sky coils are transported on a pallet, so size and weight limitations must be considered. The coil cannot be larger or heavier than the pallet or handling equipment will allow. This type is helpful in preventing damage to coil sidewalls during in-plant transport. Horizontal-eye orientation may be necessary for transporting coils with larger exterior diameter. Measures must be taken to prevent rolling or other unwanted movement and denting.
