FABRICATION
Sean Reid, a turret-press setup operator at Circa Metals, loads a full complement of Mate tools into the Prima Power Model 1530 turret press. Once programmed, the system fabricates parts automatically with punched features, bends, taps and threaded holes, all done without operator intervention and no part moves to adjacent machines for secondary operations.
Tooling Up for
Maximum Punch Productivity
An Ontario, Canada, sheet metal fabricator’s careful tool planning and utilization maximize the productivity of its pair of new turret punch presses.
The management team at Circa Metals strives to ensure that it optimizes productivity and com- petitiveness by employing a knowl- edge-based approach to punch-press tool selection and utilization. Having the latest and best turret machines requires an equal amount of tooling expertise to maximize the quality and productivity of the machines.
So notes Peter Schagen, Circa Met- als engineering-team leader. The full-
service sheet metal fabrication com- pany, located in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, fills its 99,000-sq.-ft. shop with state-of-the-art equipment in order to handle metal-fabricating projects of all sizes, and it also offers product- design assistance. Its capabilities include metal stamping and blanking, roll forming and shearing, embossing, press-brake bending, fastening, turret punching, notching, arc and resistance welding, powder coating, and product assembly.
Such a complete range of services allows the company to provide custom solutions for the energy, electrical-dis- tribution, aerospace, telecom and phar- maceutical industries. Recognizing the unique challenges of each industry, Circa Metals strives to meet and exceed environmental-compliance standards, industry standards and government
regulations; it’s registered to ISO 9001:2015 and CWB 47.1.
Turret-Press Productivity Hinges on Avoiding Secondary Ops
When it comes to operating its turret punch presses, it’s all about maximizing turret output and avoiding the need for secondary operations. To further achieve that goal, Circa Metals recently invested in four new special-applica- tion tools, from Mate Precision Tooling, Anoka, MN, to run on a pair of new Prima Power servo-electric Punch Genius turret punch presses. Specifi- cally, the new machines are a model 1530 Punch Genius (1.5 by 3-m maxi- mum sheet size without repositioning) and a model 1225 (1.25 by 2.5-m maxi- mum sheet size).
