FABTECH 2020 Canceled, 2021 Event Set for September in Chicago
After ongoing consultation and extensive efforts to identify alternatives to hold the event this November in Las Vegas, NV, presenters of the FABTECH exposition decided to cancel FABTECH 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“We now turn our focus to 2021 with FABTECH events in Monterrey, Mexico, May 4-6, and Chicago, September 13-16,” reads an announcement on the show’s website. “We look forward to once again providing an experience that allows you to meet with top suppliers, see the latest industry products and developments, find the tools to improve productivity, increase profits and discover new solutions for all of your operational needs. We will also continue to actively explore enhancements to our digital experience that extend the knowledge sharing and community building that make FABTECH unique in our industry.”

Supply Chain Drain image
Supply-Chain Drain
COVID-19 has stressed manufacturing’s worldwide supply chain, drying up formerly reliable material, part, product and service routes. How have manufacturers responded, and how will supply chains look in the post-pandemic world?

We may see a decentralization of manufacturing capacity, with companies looking to bring production home, according to an article contributed to the World Economic Forum, with policymakers increasingly may be pressured to consider whether certain products need to be manufactured at home or nearby. And, the article reads, “the transition to a new model for supply chains will be underpinned by a rapid and wholesale digitization of the paperwork that accompanies global trade.”

Weber PT
The WEBER PT is the perfect deburring machine for lasered, punched and nibbled parts. It handles deburring, rounding, descaling and surface grinding of thin sheets and heavy plates. Up to four grinding stations allow for all machining variations. Improved accessibility for maintenance; modular design; and optional simultaneous top/bottom machining are just some of the advantages of the WEBER PT.

3D Laser Cutting—A Versatile Process for Prototype and Production Shops
An industry expert offers up advice in this MetalForming August 2020 feature article for specifying the right five-axis laser-cutting cell for your operations, and tips on how to avoid burrs, optimize throughput and more. Here’s a technology nugget for job shops primarily tasked with low-volume work, as presented by Pierson Cheng, industry manager, automotive, at Trumpf North America:

“Cutting systems are designed to provide open access to the worktable with the ability to load parts of different designs or size into the machine. And, while cutting speed is also important to a job shop, it’s not as critical since they’re not cutting as many parts between setups. Instead, downtime for changeovers is the most important factor, and so we typically don’t use the top-end drive systems for these applications.”
