Despite Dip, Domestic Steel Production Remains Strong

Tuesday, April 9, 2019
Domestic raw steel production ticked back down this week, but remained strong. U.S. mills produced an estimated 1,913,000 tons at an 82.2-percent utilization rate, down slightly from 1,934,000 tons and an 83.1-percent rate for the prior week. Production decreased in the five regions—Northeast, Great Lakes, Midwest, Southern and Western—for the first time since April 2018. Despite the declines, overall year-to-date production shows an 8.4-percent gain.
