MetalForming met with a team from SMDI at the CAR MBS (Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars) in Traverse City, MI, last week to discuss the new roadmap. Says Jody Hall, SMDI vice president, automotive market: "This is the third generation of the roadmap, developed to ensure that the OEMs and suppliers can effectively use AHSS materials. Use of these steels has grown at a rate 20-percent greater than expected back in 2010-2011, much of which is being stamped and welded by suppliers. With the roadmap, we've identified some of the areas where further development is needed to ensure seamless integration of these steels into production. One of the key areas we addressed in this edition of the roadmap relates to CAE, identifying where the codes are weak and where they need further development. "There are more than 200 steel grades used in the automotive industry today," Hall continues. "We expect the roadmap to open up a dialogue within the industry that can help identify other areas we should focus on for additional development." Specific stamping-technology gaps identified in the roadmap include accurate material data; validated forming-simulation techniques; springback prediction and control; and updated pierce and trim techniques. Hot-stamping, hydroforming and rollforming processes also are covered, as are tooling technologies including lubrication, die surface treatment and die materials.
