Double-Sheet Detector Integrated into Robotic Blank-Feed Tooling

SAS Automation, Xenia, OH, a manufacturer of robotic end-of-arm tooling, introduces the DSD-36 double-metal sheet detector, integrated into its tooling for use when robotically feeding blanks into a stamping press. When press feeding, the DSD-36 can gauge the thickness of the ferrous-alloy workpiece and avoid die/machine damage from receiving too many sheets. In the presence of a double sheet, the detector produces an output to stop the machine or to signal the operator.

The unit handles blanks to ¼ in. thick. It comprises a control module in a sheetmetal housing with a single probe, forming a system that detects the thickness of ferrous metals on the face of the probe using pulsed electromagnetic detection.
