Steel Imports Tick Upward in April

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

According to Longbow Research (Cleveland, OH) steel analyst Bob Richard, steel imports rose during April 2008 by 3.4 percent year over year, and by 14.5 percent sequentially. Most (78 percent) of the increased imports were semi-finished products, primarily carbon slab coming from Brazilian and Ukrainian suppliers, Richard believes, as well as from Japan and Korea. Carbon and alloy flat-rolled product imports are up slightly (1.2 percent) sequentially and down 13 percent year over year, although April’s hot-rolled carbon-steel imports posted an 11-month high.
