VW Plans for Tennessee Include Supplier Park

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Volkswagen wants more than 80 percent of the vehicles produced from its planned factory in Chattanooga, TN, to come from North America, and is planning a supplier park for the site, according to a recent report in Automotive News Europe. Plans include local production of engines and transmissions, but not right a, says a VW spokesman. For example, when the plant opens in 2011, it will receive some engines from the VW engine facility in Mexico. The report reveals that a drawing of the VW supplier park shows six buildings located just 1000 ft. from the assembly plant. Possible components to be supplied just-in-time from suppliers in the park include cockpits, instrument panels, seats, front-end assemblies and headliners.
