North American robotics companies posted gains of 24 percent in new orders in the first quarter of 2007, according to statistics from the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), Ann Arbor, MI. Through March, North American manufacturing firms purchased 4603 robots valued at $274.5 million. Including exports, the numbers jump to 5027 robots valued at $293.9 million. “This is the highest number of robots we’ve seen ordered in a quarter since mid through 2005,” says RIA executive vice president Donald Vincent. “Orders to the automotive sector jumped 45 percent in the first quarter when compared to the prior year.”
