Metlab Gains $500,000 Grant
for Tool and Die Coating Process

Monday, August 5, 2002

An advanced coating process that promises to extend the life of metalworking tools by up to 10 times will be available from Metlab, a Philadelphia commercial heat-treating company, under a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The grant is through a federal program aimed at enabling companies to commercialize new processes that save energy. The new process will deposit coatings of vanadium carbide on stamping and forming tools, draw dies and other tools. It can treat parts up to 18-in. diameter and weighing up to 1500 lb. It employs thermal-diffusion technology to apply a coating 15 microns thick, with a surface hardness to 3800 HVN. Metlab is online at www.metlabheattreat.com.
