Spin-Lathe Upgrade
Ups Productivity at Wheel Maker

Monday, May 13, 2002

Specialty Rim Supply (SRS), operated by Specialty Blanks Inc., Terre Haute, IN, has upgraded two spin lathes used in production of aftermarket aluminum wheel rims. The improvements, courtesy of Hess Engineering, Niles, MI, reportedly raised productivity and lowered costs at SRS. The upgrade goal was to improve repeatability of the CNC program/equipment, thus reducing setup time for rim-size changes. Also, equipment and software were to be added to ensure local and long-term equipment support. The Hess upgrade included installation of four hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic servo valves and controllers, computer monitor and keyboard, CNC, and electrical input and output modules. Upon installation, SRS measured a 24-percent reduction in spin-lathe setup time and an 85-percent decrease in scrap resulting from setup, according to Ken Metzger, engineering manager at Specialty Blanks.
