Machine-Tool Consumption Up,
But Still Trails 2001

Wednesday, April 10, 2002

U.S. machine-tool consumption totaled $193.84 million in February, a 24.9-percent increase from the month prior but down 14 percent from February 2001. The numbers, from data complied by the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association (AMTDA) and the Association for Manufacturing Technology, show year-to-date (through February) consumption of $349 million, off 26.8 percent from last year’s levels. “Despite the positive economic indicators that have been reported the last two months, the manufacturing sector is likely to see a slower, more deliberate recovery than other sectors,” said Ralph J. Nappi, AMTDA president, responding to the data.
