Double-Sheet Detector Integrated into Robotic Blank-Feed Tooling
SAS Automation, Xenia, OH, a manufacturer of robotic end-of-arm tooling, introduces the DSD-36 dou- ble-metal sheet detector, integrated into its tooling for use when robotically feed- ing blanks into a stamping press. When press feed- ing, the DSD-36 can gauge the thickness of the fer- rous-alloy workpiece and avoid die/machine dam- age from receiving too many sheets. In the presence of
a double sheet, the detector produces an output to stop the machine or to sig- nal the operator.
The unit handles blanks to 1⁄4 in. thick. It comprises a control module in a sheet- metal housing with a single probe, forming a system that detects the thickness of ferrous metals on the face of the probe using pulsed electromagnetic detection.

Additive Manufacturing Stars in Online Video
Sciaky, Inc., Chicago, IL, has produced and posted an informative video highlighting its Direct Manufacturing (DM) additive-manu- facturing process. Designed to produce high- value metal parts and prototypes, Sciaky launched its DM solution, based on additive- manufacturing principles, in 2009. The firm employs the process to make near-net shape parts of titanium, tantalum, Inconel and other high-value metals, as large as 19 ft. long, 4 ft. wide and 4 ft. tall. The solution combines com- puter-aided design, Sciaky’s state-of-the art electron-beam welding (EBW) technology and layer-additive processing. Starting with a 3D model from a CAD program, Sciaky’s fully artic- ulated moving EBW gun deposits metal layer by layer, until the part is complete and ready for finish-machining. Deposition rates range from 7 to 20 lb./hr., depending on part geometry and the workpiece material. To view the video, visit www.sciaky.com/direct_manufacturing.html. New Press Blank Feeder/Coater System
Only from Union Tool
Rely on Union Tool for press blank handling and processing solutions that help maintain quality while reducing costs. This new system de-stacks individual steel blanks, applies lubricant and then locates
the blank directly into the press
– all automatically. Union roller
coaters apply controlled and
consistent amounts of lubrication
for fewer rejects and less scrap.
