3D Systems Plans Denver Expansion to Meet Demand for Healthcare and Industrial Applications

3D Systems has announced that it will add 50,000 sq. ft. of facility space as well as application expertise and new additive manufacturing (AM) technologies in Denver, CO, to address increasing demand for patient-specific healthcare and highly regulated industrial applications.
This expansion will increase the company’s Denver footprint by more than 50 percent, with completion anticipated by the second quarter of 2022. In addition to providing critical working and collaboration space for the company’s growing teams, the expansion will enable addition of multiple AM machines and large-scale post-processing equipment to automate key production-workflow aspects for parts as large as those produced in 3D Systems’ DMP Factory 500 machine (i.e., 500 mm3).
For more than a decade, 3D Systems has delivered a portfolio of healthcare products and services, including patient-specific surgical instruments and implants manufactured at its FDA-registered and ISO 13485-certified location in Denver. Through this next phase of investment, the company expects to accelerate time to market, expand its offerings and better support the needs of its growing customer base. This positions 3D Systems, according to company officials, to continue its growth trajectory for patient-specific craniomaxillofacial applications through expanded production capacity and ongoing product innovations. It reportedly also will enable the company to increase participation in the larger patient-specific orthopedics market through the development and deployment of new joint-replacement solutions.
In addition, the new investment supports 3D Systems’ Application Innovation Group (AIG), designed to accelerate the path from proof-of-concept for new customer applications to full-scale workflow definition and initial production. To support AIG, the company will add expertise as well as polymer- and metal-AM technologies to address new, more complex industrial applications such as those for aerospace.
“The combination of maturing industrial-scale metal and polymer printing technology, and advanced material solutions, with a customer base that increasingly seeks the performance, flexibility and cost benefits of large-scale AM, is driving significantly increased demand for our products and services,” says Dr. Jeffrey Graves, president and CEO of 3D Systems. “The AIG has demonstrated tremendous benefits for enabling the adoption of complex applications for customers across our healthcare and industrial businesses. We partner with customers to solve their most difficult design and production challenges and empower them to maintain that momentum. This is the heart of our growth engine for the future.”
