Navy Lab Installs New DMLS Printer

New at the Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (AML) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City (FL) Division (NSWC PCD), an M290 direct metal laser sintering machine from EOS of North America, Inc. for timely production of parts and prototypes, enabling the center to rapidly deliver solutions to ensure warfighting dominance, according to Chuck Self, the AML head.
“NSWC PCD’s goal is to produce efficient and quality products to the warfighter,” Self says, “and this printer will allow our engineers and scientists to create strong and complex products in a shorter time frame.”
The M290 employs a 400-W fiber laser in a nitrogen atmosphere to produce parts in a 250 by 250 by 325-mm build envelope.
Nicole Waters, NSWC PCD machine shops project manager, says that the printer addition allows the division to effectively create an internal 3D-printing collaboration and innovation network
“Having the metal 3D printer inhouse allows us to make parts that are customizable to the customer’s needs without lengthy ordering lead times,” she explains. “This gives our scientists and engineers the opportunity to work one on one with AML personnel to get their product built exactly the way they want. We encourage the One Team motto in the AML, and want to create the highest-quality parts for our fleet projects and research prototypes.”
