> Case Studies Illustrate How ERP Tune-Ups Add Horsepower to Operations
Six manufacturing companies small to large will provide testimonials to the operational improvements they’ve experienced by investing in new ERP software, at next month’s Manufacturing ERP Experience, April 8-9 in Rosemont (Chicago), IL. Among those slated to speak:

  • Jeff Adams, president of metal fabricator Laser Precision, Libertyville, IL
  • Ryan King, vice president of IT at Power Great Lakes, Wood Dale, IL, an OEM supplier of Perkins diesel engines
  • Tim Brinkmann, logistics manager, Spirit Manufacturing, New Berlin, WI, a contract manufacturer of precision CNC machined products

> How It’s Made: Akrapovic High-End Exhaust Systems
Here’s a 5-min. whirlwind tour of the Akrapovic factory in Slovenia that turns out stainless-steel exhaust systems. The tour features stops at a coil-fed press line, automated tube-cutting lines, CNC tube-bending machines, and robotic forming and assembly operations. Well done, as usual, by the team at How It’s Made.

> Scouts Receive a Crash Course in Robotics, Automation
From New Hampshire comes this inspiring story about Boy Scout Troop 123’s tour of two community-college training labs, where they received hands-on experience with SolidWorks 3D programming, laser engraving, 3D printing, robotics and five-axis CNC machining.

The message: Don’t wait for others to help close the skills gap; take an active role in attracting young people to manufacturing. Read the uplifting article on this Boy Scout troop’s close-up look at manufacturing (“I was amazed by the things you can do by pressing a few buttons,” said Boy Scout Jack Lazott), and contact your local troop to arrange an information-packed tour.

Says eighth-grader (and Boy Scout) Jeremiah Cullen: “The more information kids have about different types of jobs…the better idea they’ll have of what to do for a career.”
