Dear Next U.S. President: Here's What's Important for Manufacturing
This recent blog post on The Huffington Post offers up a "manufacturing wish-list" to ensure a sound U.S. manufacturing industry post-election. Six leading thinkers from industry, academia, and government share what they would say to the next American president.

On the wish list:

  • Stronger industry-university research collaborations, and incentives for universities to focus more on training students with the requisite skills to support engineering-based industries;
  • Creation of a national common purpose, driven less by funding and more by linking efforts to specific industry outcomes that make U.S. manufacturing more attractive and competitive; and
  • An omnibus Make It in America bill is the answer. Why? Because fostering a competitive environment for manufacturing requires the adjustment of a number of monetary, fiscal, and trade policy levers. First, erase regulatory and tax incentives for short-termism and restore Wall Street's function as a utility and provider of capital to industry. Increase incentives for long-term corporate investments in workers, machines, innovation, and domestic production.

Here's the blog.

> How to Dodge the Next Downturn: Avoid Surprises
As we near the end of the calendar year, companies may be tempted to cut back on travel, training, marketing and other visible costs. "Stop. Each of those is actually an investment in the future of your business," says author and keynoter Anne Graham, writing for the Association of Manufacturing Excellence (AME). Graham penned a three-part series on dodging the next manufacturing downturn. In part three, linked here, she focuses on eliminating surprising costs that shouldn't even be in your business, or as she says, "getting the sludge out."

Among the five categories of issues Graham says account for 80 percent of unnecessary costs: escalated customer issues ("get issues resolved on first contact," she says); and, meet face-to-face with customers to build and maintain strong, honest relationships ("you can't get the input you need by sending out a customer-satisfaction survey, it has to be personal.")

> Wanted: Skilled Labor
As an industry we have done a horrendous job of promoting careers in manufacturing. We have allowed people to hold a negative perception of these careers, rather than dispelling myths by sharing the truth. It's time to turn the tide.
