Tooling Barometer Indicates Die Shops are Investing in the Future
Tool and die shops are looking to apprentices to assist in replacing the aging workforce--63 percent of tool shops plan to hire apprentices in the next 12 months. So finds the recently completed Automotive Tooling Barometer, compiled by the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA) and Harbour Results Inc., (HRI). Sponsored by Die Cad Group and Expert Tech, the survey focuses on the impending talent gap within the industry.

Outsourcing represents another strategy shops are utilizing to offset the talent gap--nearly 40 percent of shops say they are likely to outsource simulation, design, and finish- or rough-machining in the next 12 months.

Picking up what Vacuum Cups Cannot
Industrial MagneticsTransporter®LP magnetic end-of-arm tooling is designed to transfer metal blanks, stampings and parts in automated and robotic applications. Engineered with powerful Rare Earth magnets, they will hold parts during power loss, minimize part shifting, provide more options for picking up perforated or odd parts, and reduce shop air costs significantly compared to vacuum cups.
Success is programmable.

> 3D Printing’s Imminent Impact on Manufacturing
“Within 10 years, every commercial airplane will have 3D printed parts on it,” predicts Stratasys CEO Joe Allison in the foreword to a new report that tracks the potential impact that additive manufacturing (AM) will have on manufacturing. Described in a blog post by Paul Tate, research director and executive editor with Frost & Sullivan's Manufacturing Leadership Council, the report identifies the key benefits of AM:
  • Focusing on more complex design capabilities (79 percent);
  • Reducing lead times for parts (76 percent); and
  • Improvements in manufacturing efficiency (42 percent).

Regarding materials, 84 percent of respondents cite metals as the material they would most like to see developed; 3D metal printing is expected to nearly double within the next 3 yr.

Stock Lubrication
Cleans Up Its Act

Unist Stock lubrication can be the ugly side of metal forming with messy presses and sloppy, wet floors. Luckily, those days are over. Uni-Roller systems from Unist use patented, internally-fed rollers to deliver smooth and consistent lube to one or both sides of the stock with no over-application or mess.
