The Dollar’s Power Surge and the Trans-Pacific Partnership

Blame the sharp increase in the value of the U.S. dollar for the stalled manufacturing-job market. So says a recent Washington Post article which notes that the U.S. trade deficit in manufactured goods has increased by more than $100 billion over the last 12 months.

The authors go on to explain why the ongoing negotiation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, meant to create avenues to boost U.S. exports, contains one serious flaw: the lack of currency provisions. “Currency interventions by Japan, Malaysia and Singapore have cost us 250,000-320,000 jobs annually over the past few years,” the article claims.

The article offers insights into the relationships between the currency imbalance, the trade deficit and employment.

> Make Way for Sensors—Lots and Lots of Sensors

“Over the next 10 years, factories and manufacturing facilities will worry less about buying new equipment and more about outfitting their spaces with an array of high-tech sensors and routers.”

So goes this blog post summarizing a new report from McKinsey & Company titled Industry 4.0: How to Navigate a Changing Industrial Landscape. The consulting firm estimates that as we usher in the “techie industrial revolution” over the next decade, manufacturers will only have to replace 40 to 50 percent of their equipment.

Also noted: Among the skills sets expected to be in high demand are those that require handling of data and analytics. Offered as an example application of how sensors will impact manufacturing is use of “smart” sheetmetal-handling robots equipped to detect and reject defective material.
