Report: Small Businesses Can Drive Manufacturing Growth
That’s the message from Susan Helper, the chief economist at the U.S. Department of Commerce, who believes that, with improved collaboration from larger corporations and the government, small businesses can drive manufacturing innovation.

On leave from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, Helper offered her views, as summarized in this article on Cleveland.com, during a recent speech in Northeast Ohio. Her presentation included highlights of a White House and Department of Commerce manufacturing report, Supply Chain Innovation: Strengthening American's Small Manufacturers, produced by Helper and a team of other economists and released this month.

Key report takeaways:

  • Small companies must innovate by working in tandem with, and not just for, larger companies;
  • By building more nationwide networks, the government can help improve supply-chain efficiencies;
  • Small companies account for nearly half of U.S. manufacturing, and barriers should be removed to allow them to contribute even more.

> China Isn’t Going Anywhere
Despite a new report indicating a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing, the Southeast Asia powerhouse is poised to succeed over the long term. An article in The Economist details three major reasons why:

  1. It is clinging to low-cost manufacturing;
  2. While some manufacturing has shifted to neighboring countries, these low-cost bases reinforce a regional supply chain with China at the center;
  3. Demand continues to rise within China, as the spending and sophistication of Chinese consumers grows.

Consider just how dominant China has become. The Economist summarizes: “China has transformed itself—and the world economy with it. In 1990 it produced less than 3 percent of global manufacturing output by value; its share now is nearly a quarter. China produces about 80 percent of the world’s air conditioners, 70 percent of its mobile phones and 60 percent of its shoes. The white heat of China’s ascent has forged supply chains that reach deep into Southeast Asia. This ‘Factory Asia’ now makes almost half of the world’s goods.”
