Video: 3D Printing of Jigs and Fixtures
Ryan Sybrant, senior manager of manufacturing solutions for Stratasys, takes us to EuroMold 2014 for a 2-min. presentation on “game-changing” 3D-printed manufacturing applications, including composite processing of tooling, jigs and fixtures. For example, Sybrant describes and showcases a 3D-printed robotic end-of-arm tool, demonstrating its complex geometries and special features—such as integrated vacuum holes--only possible when constructing the tool using additive manufacturing. Learn why a 3D-printed composite tool outperforms a traditional tool machined from solid aluminum. Other often-overlooked applications for additive manufacturing, Sybrant says, include part-transportation and inspection fixtures.

> Forbes: Identify the Economic Factors Killing Job Creation
In this Forbes.com blog, author Michael Collins explains why “less government regulation, lower corporate taxes and reforming the tax code…have little to do with producing immediate jobs for working people.”

Instead, Collins opines, job creation will start when we address five critical factors, including: enforcing trade laws and stopping currency manipulation; increasing the development (by manufacturers) of thorough apprentice-type training; and more carefully negotiating trade agreements so that they’re designed to lower the trade deficit, rather than to “simply increase overall trade, which benefits the few.”

> Webinar: Manufacturing Your Way to Lower Taxes with the R&D Tax Credit
Scheduled for next Wednesday (January 21, 2:00 PM EST), a 1-hr. webinar from the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) offers an in-depth look at what many metalformers already know: Job shops/contract manufacturers are performing R&D, and can avoid leaving money on the table by taking advantage of the R&D tax credit.

Speaker Scott Schmidt, principal of Black Line Group, also will explain a new and significant rule change from the IRS that could potentially make the R&D tax credit even more attractive and easier to claim for small and midsized companies.

Also on the webinar agenda: Jody Fledderman, current PMA Chairman and president and CEO of Batesville Tool & Die, Inc., who will speak about his experiences using the R&D tax credit; and Omar Nashashibi, partner at The Franklin Partnership, LLP, who will provide an update on tax-reform developments from Washington, D.C.

Maximize Profitability

That's one reason why Cleveland, OH-area metalformer Automation Tool & Die (ATD) opted for complete automation when it invested in a new coil line. Replete with all the bells and whistles, the line is a perfect mate for ATD's new 330-ton servo press.
