Industrial-Laser Shipments Skyrocketing

Second-quarter 2004 shipments of industrial-laser equipment and systems for North America and U.S. exports climbed 75 percent compared to second-quarter 2003 figures, according to the Laser Systems Product Group of AMT—The Association For Manufacturing Technology. Shipments within North America for the 41 reporting companies totaled $119.8 million for the quarter, with exports accounting for another $53.8 million. Cutting applications accounted for 55 percent of the quarter’s shipments. Through the first six months of the year, laser orders are up 60 percent over last year.
Turck Acquires Network Company

The acquisition will allow customers to benefit from the combined sensing, connectivity, network and interface technology expertise. New Steel Company Born in China

A partnership between Chinese steelmaker BaoSteel, Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel and European powerhouse Arcelor has founded a new steelmaking company in Shanghai, China. The startup will produce high-grade steel sheets for automobiles, according to BigNewsNetwork.com. Full-scale production begins in June 2005, and should peak at 1.7 million tons.
