Domestic Steel Shipments Down Two Percent

For the first seven months of 2002, U.S. steel mills shipped 57,966,000 net tons, down 2.0 percent from the 59,153,000 net tons shipped in the same period in 2001, according to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). In July 2002, steel shipments were 8,386,000 net tons, an increase of 3.4 percent from the 8,108,000 net tons shipped in July 2001 and a decrease of 1.7 percent from the 8,532,000 net tons shipped in June 2002. A year-to-year comparison of U.S. mill shipments, according to AISI, shows the following changes within major market classifications: service centers and distributors, down 6.6 percent; automotive, up 0.2 percent; construction and contractors’ products, up 2.1 percent; oil and gas, down 28.0 percent; machinery, industrial equipment and tools, down 10.7 percent; appliances, utensils and cutlery, up 4.4 percent; containers, packaging and shipping materials, down 0.5 percent; and, electrical equipment, down 23.1 percent. Parts Cleaner Recommended for ISO Certification

The Contract Services division of Petroferm Inc., Franklin, KY, has been recommended for ISO 9001:2000 registration by National Quality Assurance USA. The division provides outsource parts-cleaning services for various sectors of manufacturing as well as outsource sorting, inspection and packaging services. Cleaning capabilities include aqueous, semi-aqueous and solvent degreasing. In most cases, the division provides one-day turnaround for parts cleaning, claim officials. Russel Metals to Purchase
Milwaukee Operation from Metals USA

All of the assets of Williams Steel & Supply Co. (the Milwaukee, WI operations of Metals USA Plates and Shapes Northcentral, Inc.) will transfer to Russel Metals Inc., Toronto, Canada, for approximately $8.3 million (U.S.). The Milwaukee service center processes and distributes carbon-steel plate, bar and structural products.
